Tarini, a University of Michigan assistant professor of pediatrics, is debunking a long-held belief [Mary] Ingalls went blind because of scarlet fever, once one of the most feared childhood disease. In Monday’s edition of the journal Pediatrics, Tarini cites evidence Ingalls lost her vision at age 14 because of meningoencephalitis — a condition caused by inflammation of the brain and brain membranes.
“What I hope this does is when I am in the clinic and tell a parent that your child has scarlet fever, the parent doesn’t become wide eyed and scared,” Tarini said.
